About Us

Meet Dr. Botterman

Dr. Kelsey Botterman is a naturopathic and chiropractic physician who practices evidence-informed, patient-centered care. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree in 2015 from National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL. She completed her clinical internship at a non-profit Salvation Army clinic, providing care to Chicago’s underserved communities. Dr. Botterman went on to complete her Naturopathic Doctor (ND) degree in 2016, also at National University of Health Sciences. Her training in naturopathic medicine strengthened her skills in diagnosis, botanical medicine, and the broader determinants of health.

Dr. Botterman is a licensed chiropractic physician in the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota and a licensed naturopathic physician in the states of Wisconsin and Vermont. She also holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport (2018).

In addition to her formal education, Dr. Botterman has completed advanced training in acupuncture, McKenzie Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), and Functional Movement Technique (FMT). She is an active member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and the Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicians (ILANP).

Dr. Botterman has also served as a naturopathic clinician at her alma mater, where she worked with senior interns in their final year of clinical training, supporting the development of their diagnostic and patient care skills.

Dr. Botterman’s approach integrates natural therapies with current clinical evidence and a strong foundation in physiology. She values a balanced, collaborative model of care—using natural medicine where it is appropriate and effective, while recognizing the important role of conventional medicine in diagnostics, acute care, and complex conditions. When needed, she works alongside or refers to other healthcare providers to support comprehensive patient care.

She focuses on identifying the underlying contributors to illness and works with patients to develop thoughtful, individualized treatment plans that are realistic, sustainable, and grounded in evidence—not trends or one-size-fits-all approaches. She does not base treatment plans on unsupported or trending therapies without evidence of safety and effectiveness. Her practice is a good fit for individuals seeking a practical, science-informed approach to natural medicine.

Dr. Botterman lives in Crystal Lake with her husband, Nick, and their multiple pets. A lifelong resident of McHenry County, she grew up on a dairy farm in Huntley. Outside the office, she enjoys gardening, cooking, exercise, and art.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine focuses on the diagnosis and management of primary care concerns using evidence-informed natural therapies. These may include nutrition, lifestyle and wellness counseling, botanical medicine, physical medicine, and other supportive treatments when appropriate.

Core principles of naturopathic care include identifying and addressing contributing factors to illness, supporting overall health and function, prevention, and patient education. Care is individualized and grounded in physiology, clinical reasoning, and the best available evidence.

Naturopathic doctors follow a therapeutic order, beginning with foundational, low-risk interventions—such as improving diet, sleep, and hydration—and progressing to more targeted therapies when clinically appropriate. Treatment recommendations are selected based on safety, effectiveness, and the needs of the individual patient, not trends.

Naturopathic physicians are also trained to recognize potential interactions between medications, herbs, and nutrients, and to work collaboratively with other healthcare providers when needed.

Educational requirements for naturopathic doctors include completion of a four-year doctoral program at an accredited naturopathic medical school, along with comprehensive board examinations.
